The Barwon Solar Farm, a 330 MW photovoltaic project proposed by UK-based developer Elgin Energy, has received development approval from the Victorian Minister for Planning. Located approximately 49 kilometers southwest of Melbourne and 30 kilometers northeast of Geelong, the project is set to generate enough electricity to power nearly 140,000 homes annually. Additionally, a 250 MW/500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) is planned to meet evening peak demand for over 86,000 homes.
This approval was expedited through Victoria’s Development Facilitation Program, reflecting the state’s commitment to achieving 95% renewable energy by 2035. The project has also secured backing from the federal government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tender 1, announced in December 2024, which aims to support new renewable energy generation and storage projects across the National Electricity Market.
