Japan has achieved a significant milestone in construction and railway infrastructure by building the world’s first 3D-printed train station in just six hours. The West Japan Railway Company (JR West), in collaboration with Serendix Inc., constructed the new station building at Hatsushima Station in Arida City, Wakayama Prefecture. The structure, measuring approximately 2.6 meters in height and covering about 10 square meters, was assembled overnight to minimize disruption to train services.
The station’s components were prefabricated using advanced 3D printing technology, which involved creating formwork with mortar, inserting reinforcing steel into the hollow sections, and filling them with concrete. This method ensures durability and earthquake resistance comparable to traditional reinforced concrete structures. The design features local cultural elements, including images of Arida City’s renowned oranges and tachiuo fish, reflecting the region’s identity.
This project serves as a test case for JR West to explore sustainable building materials and innovative technologies in railway infrastructure. With Japan’s aging population leading to a shrinking workforce, the adoption of 3D printing in construction could address labor shortages and streamline the modernization of railway facilities.
