BYD’s Seagull electric vehicle (EV) emerged as the company’s top-selling model in April 2025, with over 55,000 units sold. Priced starting at under $16,000 AUD in China, the Seagull’s affordability has significantly contributed to its popularity.
The Seagull is a compact five-door hatchback measuring 3,780 mm in length, 1,715 mm in width, and 1,540 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,500 mm. Designed by former Lamborghini and Audi designer Wolfgang Egger, it has earned the nickname “Mini Lamborghini” in China. The vehicle offers two battery options: a 30.08 kWh pack providing a range of 305 km (190 miles) and a 38.88 kWh pack with a range of 405 km (252 miles), both based on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC).
BYD’s strategic expansion of the Seagull into markets such as Mexico, Colombia, the Philippines, and Brazil under the name “Dolphin Mini”, where it will compete with the ICE models such as the Toyota Wigo, Suzuki Swift and Mazda 2.
The Seagull is sold in right-hand drive in the UK market, although it seems unlikely to make it to Australia, where the larger Dolphin is available at around $40k.
