Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses add Live Translation and Plans for AI Assistance

by Team Confer · April 24, 2025

Meta has announced the rollout of a live translation feature for all users of its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. This functionality enables real-time translation between English, French, Italian, and Spanish during conversations. Users can hear translations through the glasses’ speakers and view transcripts on a connected smartphone. Notably, the feature operates offline if the necessary language packs are pre-downloaded.

In addition to live translation, Meta plans to introduce a “live AI” feature in the near future. This enhancement will allow the smart glasses to process visual input from the built-in camera, enabling real-time, hands-free assistance with activities such as meal preparation, gardening, and exploration. The AI will understand context between requests and can be engaged without a wake word.

Context & Background

Meta’s collaboration with Ray-Ban to develop smart glasses began with the launch of the first-generation Ray-Ban Stories in 2021. These glasses combined classic eyewear design with technology, offering features like photo and video capture, music playback, and voice control. The introduction of live translation and upcoming live AI features represents a significant evolution in Meta’s wearable technology, aiming to provide users with more interactive and context-aware experiences.

The smart glasses market is becoming increasingly competitive, with major tech companies like Apple and Google investing in augmented reality (AR) and wearable devices. Meta’s advancements in integrating AI and real-time translation into their smart glasses position the company as a significant player in this emerging field, potentially influencing the development and adoption of wearable technology in daily life.
