The Coalition has proposed constructing a nuclear power plant in Port Augusta, South Australia, on the site of the town’s decommissioned coal-fired power station. This initiative aims to revitalize the region’s energy sector and create employment opportunities. However, the proposal has elicited a spectrum of reactions from the local community, Indigenous leaders, and environmental advocates.
As the ABC reports, Yankunytjatjara and Antikirinya elder June Lennon, who experienced the effects of nuclear weapons testing in 1953, strongly opposes the plan, citing historical trauma and potential health risks.
Conversely, some residents and business owners view the project as a means to stimulate the local economy and provide jobs. The proposal’s future remains uncertain, as it lacks bipartisan support and hinges on the outcome of upcoming elections.
It should also be added that Australia’s nuclear-powered attack submarine, SSN-AUKUS, which has bipartisan support, is planned to be built in South Australia, where work has already begun on the construction yard in Osborne.

Context & Background
Port Augusta has a longstanding history in power generation, having hosted a coal-fired power station that was decommissioned in 2016. The closure led to significant job losses and prompted the community to explore renewable energy projects, with varying degrees of success. The region has also been the site of historical nuclear weapons testing, notably at Emu Field in 1953, which has left a lasting impact on Indigenous communities. These historical events contribute to the complex and emotional responses to the current nuclear power plant proposal.
