Southeast Asia Recognized for High Levels of Human Flourishing in Global Study

by Team Confer · May 9, 2025

A recent global study conducted by Baylor and Harvard Universities, in collaboration with Gallup and the Center for Open Science, has highlighted Southeast Asia’s prominence in human flourishing. The research, encompassing over 200,000 participants across 22 countries, defines human flourishing as a state where all aspects of an individual’s life are thriving.

Notably, Indonesia and the Philippines secured the first and third positions, respectively, in this comprehensive assessment.

The study’s methodology extends beyond traditional happiness surveys by evaluating multiple dimensions, including health, happiness, meaning, character, relationships, and financial security. This multifaceted approach offers a nuanced understanding of well-being, positioning Southeast Asian nations at the forefront of global human flourishing metrics.

Context & Background

Southeast Asia has consistently demonstrated strong performance in various human development indices. For instance, Singapore leads the region with a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.949, placing it ninth globally. Other nations like Brunei, Malaysia, and Thailand also fall into the ‘very high human development’ category. Additionally, countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines have shown significant improvements, moving into the ‘high human development’ bracket in recent years.

These advancements are attributed to concerted efforts in enhancing health, education, and economic opportunities. Initiatives like Thailand’s Universal Health Coverage and Vietnam’s education reforms have played pivotal roles in elevating the quality of life for their citizens. Such policies underscore the region’s commitment to fostering environments conducive to human flourishing.
