World’s Largest All-Electric Ferry Launched in Australia

by Team Confer · May 3, 2025

On May 2, 2025, Incat Tasmania launched Hull 096, the world’s largest all-electric ferry, at its Hobart shipyard. Commissioned by South American ferry operator Buquebus, the 130-meter vessel is designed to transport over 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles between Argentina and Uruguay, operating entirely on battery-electric power.

Hull 096 is equipped with a 40-megawatt-hour energy storage system, quadrupling the capacity of any existing maritime battery installation. This system powers eight electric-driven waterjets supplied by Wärtsilä, enabling efficient propulsion. The ferry also features a 2,300-square-meter retail deck, the largest shopping space on any ferry worldwide.

Following the launch, the vessel will undergo interior fit-out, battery installation, and energy system integration before commencing sea trials on Tasmania’s River Derwent later this year.

Context & Background

Incat Tasmania has a longstanding relationship with Buquebus, having constructed eight previous vessels for the company. Hull 096 marks their ninth collaboration and represents a significant shift towards sustainable maritime transport. Originally planned to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), the vessel was reconfigured to operate entirely on battery-electric power, reflecting a growing industry trend towards zero-emission solutions.

The ferry’s energy storage system, developed in partnership with Wärtsilä and Corvus Energy, is notable for its unprecedented capacity and efficiency. The 40-megawatt-hour system is four times larger than any existing maritime battery installation, setting a new benchmark for the industry. This advancement aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation solutions.
