Viking and Fincantieri have announced the construction of the Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, scheduled for delivery in late 2026. This vessel will feature a hybrid propulsion system utilizing liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells, enabling zero-emission operations and access to environmentally sensitive areas. The Viking Libra will have a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons, 499 staterooms, and accommodate 998 guests.

In addition to the Viking Libra, the companies have confirmed the construction of the Viking Astrea, another hydrogen-powered ship set for delivery in 2027. Viking has also placed orders for two additional ocean ships for delivery in 2031, with options for two more in 2033. These developments underscore Viking’s commitment to sustainable maritime transportation and its strategic growth in the cruise industry.

Context & Background

Viking has been progressively integrating sustainable technologies into its fleet. In November 2022, the company introduced the Viking Neptune, equipped with a 100 kW hydrogen fuel cell module for testing purposes. This initiative marked a significant step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the cruise industry. The collaboration between Viking and Fincantieri has resulted in multiple vessels designed with future retrofitting capabilities for hydrogen-based propulsion systems, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in maritime travel.
