French startup Beyond Aero is developing the BYA-1, a 10-seat business jet powered by a hydrogen-electric propulsion system, aiming for commercial service by 2030. This innovative aircraft is designed to offer zero-emission flights, aligning with the aviation industry’s goals to reduce its carbon footprint.

The BYA-1 utilizes six hydrogen cylinders feeding six 400-kW fuel cells, which convert hydrogen into electricity to power electric jet turbines with a peak output of 2.4 MW. This configuration enables the aircraft to carry six passengers over distances up to 1,381 miles at a cruise speed of 276 mph. Beyond Aero projects operational cost reductions of up to 55% compared to conventional jets, due to fewer parts and lower maintenance complexity, and anticipates immediate fuel cost savings of 17% by 2030, increasing as green hydrogen becomes more cost-effective.

In addition to environmental benefits, the BYA-1 promises enhanced passenger comfort with a cabin noise level 15 dB(A) quieter than traditional jets, thanks to its electric propulsion system. Beyond Aero has secured $44 million in capital and letters of intent for 108 sales totaling $914 million, positioning itself as a significant player in the transition to cleaner aviation technologies.
